The WSL 2023/24 Season is heating up! Join me as we embark on a journey through women’s soccer, discovering the 12 teams that will light up the WSL 2023/24 season.
1. Chelsea Women
Starting right off, standing tall in the heart of London, is none other than Chelsea Women FC. The club was founded back in 1992. They’re the current and four consecutive holders of the Women’s Super League trophy since 2020. They’re the defending WSL champs and one of the most dominant clubs in Europe.
Chelsea have mastered a technical, possession-focused style under manager Emma Hayes. Stocked with international superstars at every position, they are heavy favorites to take home the title again.
Chelsea’s starting XI is simply world-class. Here are the top five popular players from the team;
- Sam Kerr
- Millie Bright
- Guro Reiten
- Lauren James
- Zecira Musovic
They’re just a few big names that make this team an absolute powerhouse. After claiming both the WSL and FA Cup last season, Chelsea wants to defend their crown in an uncompromising fashion.
2. Arsenal Women
Not far from Chelsea, we have Arsenal Women’s Football Club, founded in 1987. The club has seen massive growth and success in recent years. They finished third in the WSL last season, and we’ll be coming ready to contend for the title this year.
Arsenal Women plays an attacking and possession-based style under manager Jonas Eidevall.
Arsenal’s roster is loaded with talent. Some key players to watch are;
- Vivianne Miedema
- Beth Mead
- Leah Williamson
- Their latest signee, Alexia Russo
- Kim Little
Arsenal Women could mount a serious title challenge this season with a deep squad featuring English and international stars.
3. Tottenham Hotspur Women
Still in London, well, on the Northern side, we have Tottenham Hotspur Women. The women’s club was founded in 1985 and has been making steady progress. These North London’s Spurs joined the WSL in 2019 after promotion. They finished in ninth place last season under manager Rehanne Skinner, who was sacked in March. The TOT’s new coach is Robert Vilahamn.
Robert has signed a two-year contract till 2025. He will be lucky to work with international talents, including
- Bethany England
- Ria Percival
- Kit Graham
- Becky Spencer
- Rosella Ayane
They’re a promise of an exciting season ahead.
Tottenham always plays a disciplined, defense-first style under manager Rehanne Skinner. Will that change? But I’m sure they’re finding a way to emerge from Arsenal and Chelsea’s shadow in London.
4. West Ham United Women
Let’s take another bus to East London, where West Ham United Women, founded in 1991, are ready to turn heads. West Ham United gained promotion to the WSL in 2020. They finished eighth last season under Coach Paul Konchesky.
Currently, the club is under the former Tottenham women’s manager, Rehanne Skinner. She is their first female manager, signing with the club on 20 July 2023.
She will work with female football stars such as;
- Mackenzie Arnold
- Viviane Asseyi
- Hawa Cissoko
- Jessie Stapleton

5. Aston Villa Women
As we travel north to Birmingham, we encounter the rising stars of Aston Villa Women. Aston Villa Women is a newcomer to the WSL after earning a promotion in 2020. Though their history in the WSL is relatively short, they’ve made impressive strides in women’s football.
Under the watchful eye of Coach Carla Ward, who has installed a physical and high-pressing approach, the team managed to finish at position five. The club has superstars such as
- Rachel Daly

6. Brighton & Hove Albion Women
Brighton Women’s FC joined the WSL in 2018. Based in Brighton on England’s south coast, the club plays at the Amex Stadium.
Brighton & Hove Albion is a team that has gone through turbulence during the 2022/23 campaign. I mean, for a team that had seen four coaches taking charge at different stages of the season, we can say they were fighting relegation and were nearly there. Thanks to heavens, they managed to secure the second last position, one position to relegation.
They were first managed by Hope Powell, then her assistant Amy Merricks for two interim spells, former Bayern Munich Frauen boss Jens Scheuer, and ex-London City Lionesses manager Melissa Phillips. Phillips is the new manager, signing a two-and-a-half-year contract with the club until June 2025.
The Seagulls feature Swedish international Emma Kullberg at the back, along with standout goalie Lydia Wiliams. They’ll look to prove last year was no fluke.
It was founded in 1967, then known as Brighton GPO.
7. Bristol City Women
Continuing our journey westward, we find ourselves in Bristol, home to Bristol City Women’s FC, founded in 1998. Located in Southwest England, Bristol City has slowly climbed up the women’s ranks. Well, they have had their ups and downs since they were relegated but are now back for the WSL 2023/24 season. I’m sure they’re set to surprise us all under their coach, Lauren Smith.
Keep an eye on players like the new signees Megan Connoly and Amalie Thestrup, Jamie-Lee Napier, Erin Foley, and Satara Murray as they strive for glory. Bristol City will aim to establish itself in the WSL in 2023/24 with their scrappy, relentless approach.
8. Liverpool Women
As we head north to Liverpool, we encounter Liverpool FC Women, founded in 1989. Liverpool Women represent England’s historic port city. While they may have had a quieter period recently, the team has yet to feature in the top three positions of the Women’s Super League table. However, Coach Matt Beard is guiding a talented squad featuring;
- Teagan Micah
- Niamh Fahey
- Fuka Nagano
- Sofie Lundgaard
- Mia Enderby
They’re aiming to rekindle their past glory.
Liverpool hopes its possession-based style under manager Matt Beard continues bearing fruit. This young squad wants to stamp its mark on the WSL in 2023/24 after some growing pains.
9. Everton Women
Still in Liverpool, we meet a rising club, Everton Women. After some mid-table finishes, Everton hopes its mix of veterans and young talent can continue moving upward under manager Brian Sorensen.
The Dutch international Katja Snoeijs boosts the Toffees’ attack alongside striker Nicoline Sorensen. Other popular plays you can watch out for are;
- Sara Holmgaard
- Clare Wheeler
- Aurora Galli
This team prides itself on solid team defending, looking to grind out wins.
10. Leicester City Women
The Foxes joined the WSL as a newly promoted side in 2021. The team is located in the East Midlands city of Leicester. The club came from the Championship division. After narrowly surviving relegation, manager Willie Kirk wants to push higher up the table in 2023/24.
Keep an eye on dynamic midfielder Shannon O’Brien and goalkeeper Demi Lamboune. Other popular Leicester City players are
- Sophie Howard
- Monique Robinson
- Deanne Rose
Leicester City Women will be fighting to re-establish themselves in the WSL and can achieve that with their direct, counter-attacking style.
11. Manchester City Women
Our journey now takes us to Manchester, home to both Manchester City Women and Manchester United Women. Manchester City Women, founded in 1988, has become synonymous with success in recent years. Alongside Chelsea, Man City Women are a modern superclub in the WSL.
Under Coach Gareth Taylor, City plays an up-tempo, attacking system. It’s one blessed team with not only resources but talent, too. You’ll find international skills, including;
- Alanna Kennedy
- Alex Greenwood
- Mary Fowler
- Jill Roord
- Lauren Hemp
- Khadija Shaw
Among other undoubted talent, the team promises to deliver scintillating football.
12. Manchester United Women
Last but not least, we have Manchester United Women. They’re located on the other side of the city. They’re a relatively new entrant founded in 2018. They’ve wasted no time making their presence felt.
Under manager Marc Skinner, United has steadily improved thanks to a tough, organized approach. After finishing second last season, star-studded United will push Chelsea to the limit in the title race.
The team also features pure international talent led by their goalie,
- Mary Earps
- Millie Turner

The latest signees
